Whether you’re just getting comfortable behind the machine or you’ve sewn a handful of projects already, making a zippered pillow cover is a satisfying, doable task. We’ll walk through each step together with clear instruction so you feel supported the whole way. Let’s get started!
What You’ll Need
- A pillow form (for example: 20″ × 20″)
- Fabric of your choice (3/4 yard should be plenty)
- A zipper matching the fabric
- Thread to match your fabric
- Scissors or a rotary cutter
- Cutting mat if using rotary blade
- Non slip clear ruler if using a rotary blade
- Pins or clips
- Sewing machine (capable of a zigzag and a zipper foot)
- Iron & ironing board
- Seam ripper
Tip: Choose a fabric with some texture or holiday character. It makes all the difference in a finished pillow!
Step 1: Cut & Square Your Fabric
Begin by squaring off the fabric pieces so each edge is even and straight. If your pillow form is 20″, cut two pieces at 20″ × 20″. I like to match the fabric size to the desired end measurement exactly. This will give the pillow a full, luxurious look once stuffed.
Step 2: Finish the Raw Edges
Since I’m skipping the serger for this project, I use a zigzag stitch around the raw edges to prevent fraying. If the edge puckers a little from the zigzag, no worries, just steam it flat with your iron so your corners stay crisp and clean.

Step 3: Mark & Prepare for the Zipper
With both fabric pieces right sides together, decide which edge will hold the zipper. Mark where the zipper will begin and end. If your zipper is non-standard (no tails, for example), you’ll just adjust accordingly. Sew a straight stitch on each end (for strength) and a long “basting” stitch between those marks. Then press the seam open – this is your zipper channel.

Step 4: Insert the Zipper
Place the zipper face-down on the seam, lining up the teeth right in the center. Pin in place. Switch to your zipper foot, move the needle slightly over, and sew about halfway between the teeth and the edge of tape. This placement gives a professional finish. When you reach the zipper’s metal stop (or the end), don’t sew over it. Lift the foot, pivot, and press onward. Then use your seam ripper to open the basted portion and reveal the zipper.

Step 5: Sew the Pillow Together
Unzip the zipper halfway so you can turn the cover later. With right sides together, sew the remaining three sides using a ½″ seam allowance. At each corner, clip diagonally to reduce bulk. This helps your turned corners pop out sharp. Turn the cover right side out and press again for a smooth finish.

Step 6: Stuff & Finish
Insert your pillow form, zip the cover closed, trim any loose threads, and give it a final press. You’ll step back and feel the satisfaction of a handmade piece that looks polished, fits beautifully, and adds cozy character to your space.
